The full list of books I considered at the Nicholas Hoare book shop the other day:
Paris, 1919; Margaret McMillan
Josephine B. trilogy; Sandra Gulland
The White Queen; Phillipa Gregory
The Fry Chronicles; Stephen Fry
Samuel Johnson; Peter Martin
Passionate Minds; David Bodanis
Extraordinary Canadians Series, Penguin; esp. Riel and Dumont by Boyden
John A; Richard Gwyn
Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China; Jung Chang
Travels with Herodotus; Ryszard Kapuscinski (all of his books actually)
Champlain’s Dream; Hackett Fischer
Don’t Let’s Go to The Dogs Tonight; Alexandra Fuller
When a Crocodile Eats the Sun; Peter Godwin
I’m reading Room by Emma Donoghue. It’s riveting…
I loved Don’t Let’s Go to The Dogs Tonight; Alexandra Fuller and Passionate Minds is on my list.
Don’t Let’s Go… was FABULOUS. Paris, 1919; Margaret McMillan sounds interesting–I took a course on the history of Paris & Berlin in the 20s years ago, so I’ll likely look for this book.
Wild Swans was amazing and I followed it up with some Jan Wong. SO the question is, after you considered all of these books, did you bring any home?
I brought home “Passionate Minds” and “Wild Swans”. I finished PM in 3 days. Now I need to read the book our homeschooling book club is doing for next week, but then I will dip into Wild Swans.
I have the White Queen on my pile of books to read, can let you know how it is in a couple of weeks if you’d like.
Sounds good! Thanks
