A Quote and a Question

Stretching Sunward

“Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.”
George Eliot

What is your favourite part of autumn?

I’m such a planner that I think what I love most about autumn is all the organizing and planning for homeschool, winter clothing, Christmas, etc. What’s wierd, though, is that I tend to feel overwhelmed with all the tasks before me – and yet at the same time thrive on accomplishing them all. Oh, ok, I also enjoy a return to sweaters and boots 🙂

I love finally being able to wear substantial clothing again. I’m a sweater girl, so the tank tops that Turkish weather demands get tiresome quickly. I’m so happy to be in long sleeved tshirts again and can’t wait to break out the woolies!

I also relish running in crisp weather. Nothing better than a morning run that energizes me. I just feel drained after hot summer runs.

Sweaters, scarves, clogs, corduroy. Wind, pine cones, acorns, leaves. Soup, stew, oatmeal, chai. Red, orange, brown, gold. I come alive!

I also love this quote ~ and used it on an autumn blog post a couple of years ago.

My list would mirror Kandyce’s (minus the oatmeal), but in central Texas, where I currently reside, these things are few and far between.

I do love the days when it is cool enough not to run the a.c. and open the windows. I get inspired to “fall clean” and start planning for and looking forward to the holidays. I love Thanksgiving, all things pumpkin, and fond memories of my daddy burning leaves.

I love it all. Cooler weather, sweaters, hot tea, leaves changing and falling and crunching, clear skies, rainy days, heavy blankets…I could go on and on. We got married in October, mostly because I love autumn so much – we decorated with lots of leaves and harvest-themed stuff, and served apple cider and pumpkin bars at the reception. Sigh.

Mmmm, the smells do it for me! The fresh air, the scent of a wood fire, wet wool, soggy leaves, apple cider, a gasoline chainsaw floating towards me with a touch of pine and a lot of birch…

This is my first autumn on the US mainland in 5 years. I’ve been in Hawaii, where autumn wasn’t such a dramatic change. The smell of leaves and woodsmoke, the colors, the shameless making of soups and stews. Our house is cold, but not quite cold enough yet to turn on any heat. I’m knitting a hat, Felicity, in Cascade Dolce, and anticipating the wearing, early in the morning, as I walk my dogs…

Autumn is my favorite season. I love apple picking, apple cider, leaves crunching under my feet, the crisp cool air in the morning, needing a sweater when I head out the door, seeing pumpkins everywhere I go, soups and stews, corn maizes and fairs. Celebrating my daughter’s and my father’s shared birthday while the weather is just perfect.

  9. Schwester K says:

    Squash!! Mmmmm, tasty.

Wearing jeans and tshirts, with fun knitwear for extra warmth.

Anticipating skating on the river, as well as tobogganing.

  10. Jen says:

-the smell and crunch and colour of the changing leaves
-simmering soups in my crock pot all day
-catching up with the moms at dance class
-sitting in my hot tub watching the stars with a brisk breeze on my face (this is a new love!)
    -knitting wool
    -wearing scarves

I could go on and on….autumn is my favourite season!

What do I love the most?

I love how each and every Autumn my kids (and husband) wonder at the shortening of the days, and the turning of the leaves.

I love the change in food (bring on the soups, the stews and the crumbles!)

We traditionally take a family holiday in Autumn to a woodland. It is always breathtaking.

Lastly, there are no family birthdays in Autumn, I really love this!

The deep red leaves are my very favorite part of Autumn. If I ever build a house and landscape the yard I’d have as many things that turn red in the Fall as possible! I also love crisp cool days for walking and being outside, raking leaves, the scent of the downed leaves and the scent of bonfires. My son’s birthday is October 15 and that often merits a bonfire just for the “Fall Smell” it generates. I like the fall cooking, too! Wonderful smelling [and tasting! ]borsct or minestrone and home-baked bread. I love reading under a nice warm blanket with a warm kid or cat nearby. I like every part of Fall except that rain that eventually turns to sleet and ice, and for the too-short days!

What I’m really noticing and loving this year is the early darkness. We come in from doing our separate things outside and instead of being bedtime, it’s still early enough to play games, watch a movie together – things like that. I guess, it feels like we have entered into a slower pace of life, and I’m really enjoying it.
